takes refuge in my old boot . . .
winter draws near. |

In New York City
all is grey and bitter --
The flower vendor! |

one yellow leaf
clings to the branch
in a world of grey. |

outside Kmart,
a heron wades in
the storm drain |

Black cat in white snow --

M. Kei is a poet who lives on the eastern shore of the Chesapeake Bay in Cecil County, Maryland. He is a volunteer crewman aboard the Martha Lewis, a historic wooden oysterboat and the last sailing vessel in North America to still be employed commerically at the trade for which she was built. When he is obliged to earn a living he is an instructor in a program for at-risk youth who have dropped out of school.
